Wichita Beacon, Sedgwick County, Kansas
(1872 – 1980)
In 1872 Fred A. Sowers founded the Wichita Beacon, a daily and weekly paper, and this was the first daily paper to be issued in Wichita.
In 1897 Mr. Allen purchased the Wichita Daily Beacon and in 1918 was the chief owner of that paper, the recognized leader in news distribution and in influence in the southwestern quarter of the state.
The Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society has an online obituary index for the Wichita Beacon and Eagle Newspapers for the years 1955-2003.
Our record of editors for this newspaper currently only goes to 1918. We’d like to have the list of editors from 1918-1980, and include biographies/photos for each one if possible. Anyone having further information is encouraged to submit such to us.
